ADDISON — Following a dominating defensive performance, the Winston County Yellow Jackets upended the Addison Bulldogs 14-0 in historic fashion at A. G. Hicks Stadium in Addison Friday night. This was the third win for Winston County over Addison in a row which hasn’t been accomplished by the Yellow Jackets since the mid 1980’s. In addition, Addison hadn’t been shut out in a game since their home opener in 2015 against Pickens County.
“This is a great feeling,” said Winston County’s Caleb Simmons about his winning debut as a first time high school head coach. “I’m just so proud of these kids. They’ve worked so hard. I can’t be more proud of them and my assistant coaches.”
Addison (0-1) controlled the clock and the ball in the first half, but every Bulldog drive before halftime ended in a turnover on downs in Yellow Jacket territory. Winston County finally took advantage with 21 seconds left in the second quarter as Chris Clemons scored on a 32 yard run to take a 7-0 lead into the half. Clemons also scored the Jackets’ second touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter, leading the team with 143 yards on 16 carries as well as two catches for nine yards.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) held the Bulldogs’ offense to two three and outs and only seven yards in the third quarter with a stifling defense. The fourth quarter wasn’t much easier as the Bulldogs had only three possessions which ended with a fumble and two more turnover on downs in Winston County territory. “The defense won this game,” said Simmons. “I give all the credit to the defense tonight.”
